In 2010 the Anglo-Australian Observatory will see both its 36th anniversary and its transition from a joint UK and Australian facility to a wholly Australian entity, the Australian Astronomical Observatory. This transition will occur on 1 July 2010.
To celebrate the past successes and the exciting future of the AAO, we are holding a Symposium with the theme "Celebrating the AAO: Past, Present and Future". The meeting will be held in Coonabarabran over 21-25 June 2010. There will be a welcome reception, an open day at the AAT, and half-day of tours around the region, along with a number of other social events. More details of the social events are available on the logistics page.
We are looking forward to a fascinating and enjoyable celebration covering historical overviews of the AAO, ongoing research, and eagerly anticipated developments. More details of the program as it is developed, and other updates will be found on this webpage.
POST CONFERENCE UPDATE We plan to provide a record of "Celebrating the AAO" in the form of a book, capturing the history and current state of the AAO for posterity. Those who gave presentations at the Symposium should download the Word template (.doc or .docx) which contains instructions for providing a written version of your contribution, for inclusion in these proceedings. The book will be published by the Ausralian Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, and will be distributed to all registered participants for free, as well as to major libraries and institutions. While the book is mainly intended to be a record of the talks presented at the conference, we want it to be interesting and attractive to a general audience, with plenty of photographs: anecdotes and reminiscenses are also welcome.
We also encourage you to provide appropriate images, photographs and illustrations. The contributions have the following page limits: 10 pages for speakers with 40min talks and 4 pages for speakers with 20min talks.
The deadline for the written presentations is 1 August 2010 .
The final conference program is available HERE.
The conference abstracts, including a list of registered participants, are available HERE.
PDF copies of all of the presentations given at the conference are available HERE.

Memorabilia
We are using this meeting as an opportunity to seek out any notes, photos or other general memorabilia that any of you may possess so that we may capture this for our archives. If you could email any digital media to David Malin, or send other media so that we may scan it as soon as possible, we would be most grateful.
