Preamble: The detailed fibre-ing guide and the
FLAIR fibre-ing summary document provide full details of the fibre-ing process
and should be consulted as necessary.
- Wear UV safety goggles during the fibre-ing process.
Consequences if ignored: Possible permanent eye damage!
- Check the focus of the UV lamp. Obtain the most concentrated
UV beam to ensure adequate glue curing.
Consequences if ignored: Ferrules will not stick down properly, may
be
easily dislodged and may `pop-off' later.
- Check focus of imaging CCD as each PH has a different
value.
Consequences if ignored: Everything will look `fuzzy' and it may
be more
difficult to determine object centres with the cursor.
- Check the gripper jaws for glue build-up before you
start. Clean as necessary using a dichloromethane bath (if time
permits) or else careful removal with a razor blade. Also check for
glue between the gripper jaws
Consequences if ignored: Ferrules may not sit properly on the plate
and
may `pop-off'. Ferrules will not be in proper focus in the
telescope and may also be at an incorrect angle to the incoming beam
leading to significant S/N loss.
- Check the 3 gripper heights (L,C,P) at start of each
fibre-ing session or if the AF program has been re-started.
Consequences if ignored: Gripper may not descend fully to plate level
and thus ferrules may not be properly seated.
- At the start check for excessive `play' with plate movement in the
PH and secure if necessary with cotton buds.
Consequences if ignored: Plate may move under pressure of ferrule
movement. This could lead to a loss in registration between
fibre-core and object centre and thus zero or reduced S/N when observing.
- Do not over-illuminate slit output end by placing desk lamp in too
close proximity.
Consequences if ignored: Centre of fibre-core may not be properly
determined which would lead to improper centering on target objects.
