How to apply for AAT time

Observing time on the AAT is allocated equally by two bodies, the Australian Time Assignment Committee (ATAC)  and the UK Panel for the Allocation of Telescope Time (PATT) . Any changes to procedures and requirements are announced in the AAO Newsletter.

Daytime observing in the infrared is possible, with certain constraints and with the approval of the Director. Observers who wish to make daylight observations should state this specifically in their application for observing time.

Observers working at UK institutions usually request telescope time through PATT, and observers at Australian institutions through ATAC. Collaborative proposals from the two countries, and proposals connected with neither country, may be sent to either or both bodies. No special allocation of telescope time is made to AAO staff, though 10% is reserved for use at the Director's discretion. This is used mainly for instrument testing, maintenance and engineering work, and sometimes for service observing (see below).

The criteria for deciding whether an application for telescope time will be granted are the scientific merit of the application and the feasibility of the proposal with the available equipment and support staff.

See here for the latest application deadlines and other materials.

Requests for service observing

Applications for AAT service observing time (for CCD imaging, prime focus photography, infrared observations and optical spectroscopy) can be made for programs requiring not more than two hours of telescope time. These applications should be sent directly to the AAO Director, and are assessed according to the criteria outlined above. Unlike regular PATT and ATAC proposals. Service requests may be submitted by electronic mail.

Application forms for service time cane be found here.

Full guidelines and hardcopy forms are available from the Director.
