DOME SAFETY IN THE AAT

RESTRICTED AREAS AND NIGHT TIME RESTRICTIONS

At all times, access to floors above two and a half in the AAT building is restricted to AAO staff and the scheduled AAT observer(s) for that night. Scheduled AAT observers would normally only access floors 4 and 6.

At night, all approved visits to the restricted areas of the AAT by personnel not essential to the night’s observations must be kept to the minimum possible duration and impose no significant disruption or distraction to those involved in the performing the observations.

Anyone entering the dark areas of the dome must first obtain the permission of the Night Assistant and must report back to the Night Assistant on leaving the dark area. Nobody may enter a dark area without a torch.

The AAT night assistant has absolute authority to request anyone to leave the restricted areas of the building.

These rules apply to all persons entering the AAT building. Additional restrictions for non-AAO staff and observers not currently scheduled on the AAT are listed below.

OTHER ASTRONOMERS

Other astronomers may enter the building during the day, but are restricted to the office area on the first floor, the terminal area on the second floor and the conference room on floor two and a half. At night, they may enter the building to work, but they must make their presence in the building known to the Night Assistant (normally by phoning the console room from the entrance lobby).

Visiting astronomers about to start an AAT run or who have just completed a run may legitimately require access to the restricted areas of the building (for example, to set-up or to consult with the current observers). Such visits are only permitted at the invitation of the current observers and with the permission of the Night Assistant.

OTHER VISITORS

Other visits to the telescope (including visits by family and friends of AAO staff members) can only be made with the written prior approval of either the Director or the Officer-in-Charge, AAT. Such visitors must be accompanied by an AAO staff member at all times.

Only in exceptional circumstances will such visits be permitted at night, and then only with the agreement of the observers and with the explicit permission of the Night Assistant.

DOME SAFETY IN THE UKST

AAO STAFF AND SCHEDULED UKST (FLAIR) OBSERVERS

Access to the UKST is restricted to AAO staff and the FLAIR observer(s), if present for the observing run.

At night, any person entering the dark areas of the dome must first obtain the permission of the UKST observer and must report back to them on leaving the dark area. No person may enter a dark area without a torch.

OTHER ASTRONOMERS

Other astronomers may enter the UKST building during the day but are restricted to the plate library and tea room.

Visits to other parts of the UKST building may only made with the permission of a member of UKST staff, and all such visits must be accompanied by an AAO staff member.

OTHER VISITORS

Other visits to the telescope (including visits by family and friends of AAO staff members) can only be made with the written prior approval of either the Director or the Astronomer-in-Charge, UKST. Such visitors must be accompanied by an AAO staff member at all times.

Only in exceptional circumstances will such visits be permitted at night, and then only with the explicit permission of the UKST observer.
