Workshop Programme
The workshop has a relaxed format with 6 review talks and 18 short talks -- all talks are by invitation only. There will be space for posters in the coffee room. Here is a list of the confirmed 45 participants.
Conference Facilities
The Little Bay Conference Centre is beautifully situated on a beachside golf course at Maroubra, 18 km south of Sydney, and 9km south of the international airport. The conference facilities are operated by the Australian Graduate School of Management (UNSW) and are situated on the grounds of Prince Henry Hospital. Detailed information on how to get to the Conference Centre can be found here -- but you may prefer to use this map to locate the campus in relation to Sydney, and this map to find the conference centre once you are on the campus. There is also this map which shows the context of the hospital campus. The conference facilities are restricted to 40-50 people. Guest parking is complimentary.
Time Out
Little Bay offers swimming, snorkelling and diving at the sheltered beach, walking and jogging along the cliffs and coastal tracks. The Conference Centre can book rounds at the adjacent golf course. Here is some live action from Little Bay.
Sponsors and Registration
The participants are expected to register on the first day of the meeting. The registration fee will be A$150.00 to cover some fraction of the cost of the conference dinner and refreshments provided each day by the Conference Centre. The cost of the meeting is offset by contributions from the Anglo-Australian Observatory, the Australia Telescope National Facility, and the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics of the Australia National University.
Workshop Dinner on the Harbour
There will be a conference dinner on Tuesday evening. This will be held aboard a Vagabound Cruise ship leaving from the Man of War steps at the Opera House at 7pm. The harbour cruise will last three hours. Please be prompt since the boat will not wait for you. The cost of the dinner (A$85) is covered by the registration fee. Please let me know (jbh@aao.gov.au) if you would like to bring a partner with you. We need to confirm final numbers by November 17th.
Workshop Proceedings
These are to be published by PASA and will be refereed. We have negotiated 100-110 pages with PASA to be shared across the invited talks. The submission deadline is March 1st, 2004 : if speakers do not meet this publication deadline, their page allowance will be shared among the other submissions. At the moment, there is no provision for poster papers due to their strict refereeing policy. However, it may be possible for particularly keen individuals to expand their poster papers into PASA papers. Please contact me (jbh@aao.gov.au) or see me at the meeting.
Hotels
A particularly convenient place to stay is the Crown Plaza at Coogee Beach. You can reach them via their web site, or by phone (+61 2 9315 7600) or by fax (+61 2 9315 9100). There are three web booking systems (1,2,3) you can use, all offering different rates! Room rates are unlikely to fall below A$100 per night.
Another possibility is to stay at one of the many hotels in the City. The Rugby World Cup comes to an end in Sydney on Saturday 22nd, so you may find it easier to book a room if your first night is Sunday 23rd.
