Installation Procedure
GalaxyCount was developed on Mac OS X 10.4, and has been tested successfully on Windows XP,
Solaris 8 and Linux Redhat 3.
In order to run GalaxyCount you must have a relatively recent version of the
JAVA runtime environment (JRE) installed, as GalaxyCount makes use of the JAVA
Swing package. This is available free from
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp. It comes as part of the
standard installation in some recent releases of Unix, Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.
Download the JAVA archive containing the program and supplementary files.
Unpack the JAVA archive, either by double clicking the file or within a Unix shell, type,
jar xvf GalaxyCount.jar (this requires that the Java Development Kit has been
installed). Alternatively you may unpack the archive using WinZip (Windows), unzip (UNIX) or StuffitExpander
(Mac). This will create a new folder/directory named galaxycount.
To run the program from within a
Unix/DOS shell change to the newly created directory, then type java GalaxyCount.
To run GalaxyCount from a different directory from the one containing
the code, first set the environment variable CLASS_PATH to point to the directory containing the source code.
