AAT Proposal Statistics

This page is a database of semester-by-semester proposal statistics (instrument usage, oversubscription factors, nationality of P.I., etc.) for the Anglo-Australian Telescope. It is maintained by the AAO Technical Secretary, and since it is based on proposals actually scheduled by the AAO (rather than proposals nominally awarded time by PATT/ATAC/AATAC), the numbers may vary from earlier collations of statistics. The statistics are given separately for PATT and ATAC, as well as a combined total for both committees, or AATAC (from 06A). Note that Target of Opportunity (ToO), Override proposals, Director's Time, and Service nights are not included in the totals of allocated nights (but Long Term allocations from previous semesters are counted as "new" proposals in subsequent semesters). From Semester 03A-05A, UKST proposals were also submitted to PATT and ATAC using the standard forms, but these are not included here.

N.B. From Semester 02A onwards (indicated by a lighter background colour in some tables), applicants were required to add on a 33% overhead as a weather allowance. Oversubscriptions have not been normalised for this.

Table 4: Requests and allocations by Scientific Category. Beginning in Semester 00B, applicants were asked to choose the most appropriate category from one of the following:
  1. Solar system and extrasolar planets.
  2. Interstellar Medium and star formation.
  3. Stars and stellar populations.
  4. Low-z universe.
  5. High-z universe.
For each semester and category, A = # of proposals submitted, B = # of nights requested, C = # of proposals scheduled, and D = # of nights scheduled. In each case, the percentage of the total number of nights/proposals for all categories is given in parentheses. The redshift survey nights have been split equally between categories 4 and 5.

Overall/AATAC Proposal Statistics

Up until Semester 05B, these are simply the sum of the PATT and ATAC statistics compiled above. From Semester 06A, these are the statistics for the joint Anglo-Australian Time Assignment Committee (AATAC).

Table 8: Number of applications, sorted by Principal Investigator's institutional affiliation. The column marked Nreq is the average number of nights requested per proposal; the column marked Psch is the number of scheduled programs; and the column marked Nsch is the average number of nights allocated per scheduled programe.
