Conceptual design for the High Resolution Optical Spectrograph for the Giant Magellan Telescope

Stuart Barnes

Abstract:
I will give an outline of a conceptual design for the Giant Magellan Telescope High Resolution Optical Spectrograph. The GMT HROS concept is a multiple beam instrument which employs two separate echelle gratings and four cameras allowing complete wavelength coverage from 300 nm to 1um. The size of the dispersive optics are keep to a minimum by using anamorphic optics and a high resolution mode may use pupil image slicing. Both of these concepts are similar to those of the proposed OWL CODEX and Noctua instruments. Seeing limited resolving powers from approximately 20K to approximately 60K will be possible. Higher resolutions approaching 150K to 200K are probable. A fibre feed is likely to be included for use in a multiple object mode. The entire instrument will be approximately 2.5 m x 5m in size.
