AAO Colloquium.

Tuesday, 14th November - 3:30pm AAO Conference Room

From SUSI to the LMC and beyond.

Dr Pierre Maxted

University of Southampton

I will discuss how observations of eclipsing binary stars in the LMC can be used to measure its distance to an accuracy of about 2% with very low systematic error. This distance scale will be tied directly to angular diameter measurements for nearby stars which will be measured by long baseline interferometers such as SUSI. I will present preliminary results (if any) from my up-coming AAT observing run.
