The interpretation of UV+optical+near IR spectra of starburst galaxies.

Ariane Lancon

I will discuss how the simultaneous use of spectroscopic information at multiple wavelengths helps us disentangle the relative weights of young, intermediate age and old stellar populations in the integrated light of the very central regions of starburst galaxies such as NGC7714. The inevitable issues related to the presence of dust will be addressed (extinction law, ratio of obscuration to reddening, ratio of reddening to far-IR emission). Results of two methods will be presented. The first one is a classical step-by-step exploration of an ensemble of standard star formation scenarii and their combinations, and the second one an automatic inversion based on Bayesian statistics. The pros and contras of each method will be highlighted.
