Exploring the z > 5 Universe Prior to the Era of JWST and TMT

Determining the characteristic properties of the sources which ended the "Dark Ages" is the latest frontier in understanding how stars and galaxies form. The quest is also motivating the construction of new facilities such as the James Webb Space Telescope and a future generation of large ground-based telescopes. I will review the progress being made via various survey techniques demonstrating the key role that strong gravitational lensing can play in securing detailed information for individual intrinsically faint distant sources. As well as giving the first glimpse of the star formation activity in the redshift range 5 < z < 10, information obtained from ongoing surveys will be of great value in determining how to optimally exploit future facilities.
