"An Integral View of Bar-Driven Secular Evolution"

Abstract. Studies of barred galaxies in the local universe have provided powerful constraints on their secular evolution. While spectroscopic measurements in 2D have mainly focused on the interstellar component, two dimensional studies of the stellar counterpart have only become possible with the advent of integral-field spectroscopic surveys. Here we present new results for 12 early- and late-type barred galaxies using the integral field spectrograph SAURON. Our 2D maps, combining several SAURON pointings per galaxy, extend beyond corotation and allow us to probe radial dependencies within and past the bar. In this talk, we focus on the bar strength calculated via radial and tangential velocities from our kinematic maps and compare them with the photometric results obtained by S4G. In addition, we will present stellar population maps showing the level of mixing induced by the bars highlighting the difference to their surrounding disks and discuss the occasional misalignment of the stellar and gas velocity distributions found with respect to the major axis of their bars and/or host galaxies. These aspects are important to understand the physics of the ongoing secular evolution in the galaxies and provide critical insights into their dynamics.
