"Extreme stellar systems vs hierarchical galaxy assembly: the biggest and the smallest"

Abstract. Theoretical models of galaxy evolution in the LCDM scenario are facing a complex challenge: the understanding of the interplay between structure assembly and star formation. I will present two very different cases for which such interplay is crucial:

1) when we understand the assembly but not the star formation history: Brightest Cluster Galaxies I will show how an accurate modeling of these objects forces us to redefine our concept of passive evolution, and reconciles the predicted and observed properties of these galaxies.

2) when we understand the star formation but not the assembly: Globular Cluster systems I will present a model for the assembly of GC systems in galaxies, and how it can be used to constrain the galaxy star formation history and the evolution of the galaxy mass-metallicity relation.
