"Elemental gas-phase abundances on galaxies hosting type Ia SNe"
Abstract. The metallicity of the progenitor system producing a type Ia supernova could play an important role on the estimation of the maximum luminosity of the explosion. This dependence may modify the usual calibration between the light curve parameters of SN Ia and its absolute magnitude. To test this hypothesis we analyze SLOAN/SDSS optical spectra of galaxies hosting SN Ia. We measure their emission-line intensity ratios and estimate their oxygen abundances by using well known empirical calibrations. Our results are also compared with those abundances obtained by the direct method when possible. We find a good agreement of the oxygen abundance using different techniques. We also observe a decreasing tendency of oxygen abundances with redshift. The final aim of our analysis is to establish if the chemical abundances actually affect the determination of the absolute magnitude of the SN Ia and their position in the Hubble diagram. We will hence provide relationships that help reducing their dispersion and systematic errors by using the metallicity-dependent theoretical calibration provided by Bravo et al. (2010).
