Messier 43 (NGC 1982) is in intriguing and attractive object, usually overlooked because of its proximity to the more spectacular display of M42, the Orion nebula. Though it appears as number 43 in Messier's catalogue, it was first reported by de Mairan in 1731. Unlike the Orion nebula, with which it is certainly associated, it seems to be illuminated by a single star. Related Images AAT 19. The Orion nebula AAT 19a. The Orion nebula (wider field) AAT 19b.
