The Ara molecular cloud in the far southern sky is full of interest. Here dusty gas and starlight mix to produce vivid reds and gentle blues. The whole scene is set against a curtain of faint stars that are more distant than the dust. There is enough interest in this little-known region to justify a more detailed look and the two adjoining images AAT 74 and AAT 75 show two quite different parts that appear together here in a field of view that is about three-quarters of the AAT's full prime focus field when used photographically.
