Galaxies, near and far

NGC 2997, spiral galaxy
Galaxies are vast collections of stars, ranging from a few million to many billions of them. Some also contain gas and dust from which new stars form and many are interacting, one with another, distorting their shapes. Given such a range of masses and variety of environments and it is not surprising that galaxies appear in many forms. The most spectacular are the gassy spirals such as NGC 2997, which is like our own Milky Way. It has two smaller, irregular-shaped companions, the Large Small Magellanic Clouds. Among the giant galaxies are the rare, seemingly featureless ellipticals such as M87, while small galaxies like the Leo Dwarf are common.
