The Puppis supernova remnant is in the same direction
in the sky as the much larger Vela supernova remnant
and the Gum nebula, but it is much younger, about 400 years old. The supernova is at a distance of about 7,000 light years.
The nebulosities are faint but finely structured. An early AAT plate of the region, which just happened to be available, was used in the original Nature paper to demonstrate the usefulness of the photographic amplification process. |
