This page is the gateway to a unique collection of wide-field astronomical photographs, mostly made with the telescopes of the Australian Astronomical Observatory by David Malin. Navigating the pages The menu at left gives access to the image files in several ways. The most rapid is from the simple text lists, including a searchable list of all objects, useful if you know what you are looking for. The most convenient (but slightly slower) access is from the thumbnail pictures. Both link directly to the captioned images. If you really don't know what you want, have a look at the 50 favourites. About the photographs These are some of the finest wide-field astronomy pictures made with professional telescopes anywhere and every effort has been made to capture the true colours of distant stars, galaxies and nebulae using innovative photographic techniques and CCD detectors. The images have detailed captions and the full NGC 2000.0 catalogue entry. Galaxy images also carry NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) data links. Digital files All images, new and old are available as TIF or JPG files in a range of standard sizes up to 100Mb (23 x 28.5cm, 600dpi TIF or JPG). These uniquely high res images are intended for film and TV zoom sequences and for high quality publications. Contact us for more details. New images The AAT's prime focus has recently been upgraded to accommodate a new generation of highly sensitive CCD detectors. The first colour images made with the new facility are now available, currently only in digital form. Most of the photographic images have recently been digitally re-mastered from the original 3-colour separations. This has allowed us to create new, high resolution versions of many existing images and some new pictures that could not be made photographically.
