A digital camera image of 2dF field plate 0 configured with ~ 200 optical fibres for the first science observations on the night of June 19/20. The miniature (4 x 2mm) magnetic buttons can be seen concentrated towards the centre of this galaxy cluster field in Centaurus. Around the circumference are the fibre retractors in banks of 10 which keep the bare fibres (200µm diameter) under constant tension. Further details on the spectra obtained from this run are given inside this issue.
