Astronomy Thesaurus

Compiled by

Robyn M. Shobbrook - Anglo-Australian Observatory, Robert R. Shobbrook - Sydney University, School of Physics

The thesaurus is endorsed by the International Astronomical Union and has been compiled to try to standarise the terminology in the field of astronomy. It is for aiding unambiguous library cataloguing and more precise recall of datafrom computer databases. The thesaurus is intended for use by astronomy librarians and scientists. Please read the introduction for the methods used to compile the thesaurus and for reference to our collaborators - an international team of astronomy librarians without whom this project would not have succeeded.

The thesaurus is available in hard copy. The ftp file contains the introduction and the main file showing the primary terms with their broader, narrower and related terms. Some parts of the hard copy thesaurus have not been included e.g. the lower case Greek alphabet.

Librarians at the major institutions around the world have been supplied with free copies of the thesaurus. The International Astronomical Union Sydney University and the Australian department DITAC have provided financial support for the printing and distribution of this work; for this we are extremely grateful. The cost of the project has been high and therefore we request that for those who wish to obtain a hard copy for personal use (other than librarians) pay per copy, $25 AUD + $10 for airmail postage overseas and $5 for local postage. Orders should be prepaid and addressed to the AAO librarian.

The following TREX files are available for dos Mac and Unix systems and have been compressed. They are available via anonymous ftp from aaoepp.aao.gov.au Once you have connected to the aao anonymous ftp then change directory to lib_thesaurus ie cd lib_thesaurus. Here you will find the following files plus some readme files with further information. Simply ftp the required files.

DOS - trex.zip

MAC - trex.sit.hqx

UNIX- trex.tar.Z

The .zip (IBM format)file should be uncompressed using PKunzip software. The .sit.hqx (MAC format) should be uncompressed using binhex and Unstuffit software. The uncompression software used is Public Domain and can be easily retrieved from anonymous ftp sites. The unix version trex.tar.Z should be uncompressed then untared

Multilingual Suplement

Note that the ASCII (.txt version) of the Supplement has the terms in rows in the order English, French, German, Italian and Spanish, each term being separated from the next in the row by a 'tab' character. Your favourite word processor, spreadsheet or even database software should be able to recognise these 'tabs' in each row as separators for columns in a table. After loading the file 'MULTLING.TXT' into your software, it should be fairly simple to format it as a table.
