Appendix C1: General Setup

1. Configure telescope optics

• Install coudé f/36 top end mirror
• Select coudé 3 mirror
• Open coudé 4 mirror cover
• Connect coupling to master synchro for coudé 5 drive
• Switch on coudé 5 drive power
• Shift coudé 5 mirror to UCLES location
• Install TV camera; focus on slit (UCLES) or slicer (UHRF)
• Nighttime - remove coudé 5 cover and open east coudé hatch

2. Ensure that the spectrograph hardware is ready:

• Turn on the power, following the labelled switch sequence 1-5: SYNTEL micro-computer, calibration lamps, ``5V,24V" supply, main switch.
• Switch the slit shutter to `CCD' for CCDs, or `ECHELLE' for other (e.g. MANUAL) work.
• Switch the slit shutter control to UCLES.
• Switch the interlock response to UCLES. Note that the camera shutter interlocks are NOT fool-proof. Only one camera shutter can be protected; it should be the one that will be used, and the other camera shutter should remain closed.
• Remove the UCLES collimator dust cover.
• Remove the UCLES perspex grating covers.

• Turn on the power, following the labelled switch sequence 1-5: SYNTEL micro-computer, calibration lamps, ``5V,24V" supply, main switch.
• Switch the slit shutter to `CCD' for CCDs, or `ECHELLE' for other (e.g. MANUAL) work.
• Switch the slit shutter control to UHRF.
• Switch the interlock response to UHRF. Note that the camera shutter interlocks are NOT fool-proof. Only one camera shutter can be protected; it should be the one that will be used, and the other camera shutter should remain closed.
• Turn on the stabilized laser. Initially only one of the lights will be on. After a while (patience is a virtue) both lights will be on, indicating that the laser has stabilized.
• Remove the UHRF focal reducer port dust covers.
• Ensure CCD subrack is on foam mats, the fans exhaust away from the light path, and there is enough freedom in the cables should the detector be moved between 0.3M and 1.0M.
• Optical bench should be floating on airbags.
• Connect the control room PANIC button

3. Start the SYNTEL micro-computer

There are two micro-computers: the 68020 and a redundant 6809.

68020:

reset (back RHS of chassis)

LISTEN !!! to hear the 9 relay clicks in sequence, which should repeat with a second sequence. If they do not all come on regularly, there is a problem with powering-up the hardware.

   Insert floppy d1 (RHS)
   Press reset switch on front
   /d1/vax    (or  /d1/manual  to control without VAX)
