ELECTRICIAN

Applications are invited for the above position which is based at the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO) near Coonabarabran, NSW. Coonabarabran is an attractive country town with very good schools, affordable housing, located within a clean and healthy environment with the popular Warrumbungle National Park nearby.

The AAO, which is one of the world’s leading astronomical facilities, operates two major optical telescopes, the 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) and the 1.2m United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope (UKST) located at Siding Spring Mountain near Coonabarabran with the headquarters in Sydney.

The Building Services group requires an Electrician for a varied and interesting role carrying out preventative as well as breakdown maintenance on equipment such as telescope systems, air conditioning, fire alarms, switchboards, water and sewerage plant and general power and lighting. A major refurbishment project is in progress and will require the installation of new plant and equipment.

The successful candidate will be a fully qualified and licensed electrician with a “can do” approach to provide building maintenance and repairs as well as electrical installation. You will be expected to both work as part of a team and unsupervised. A demonstrated ability to work at heights is essential.

The appointment is full time for a term of three years and includes an attractive superannuation scheme.

Carrying out preventative as well as breakdown maintenance on electrical plant within the AAT UKST and the Utilities plant room including maintaining a stock of essential spares for all the electrical systems.

Interpret electrical, architectural and mechanical diagrams, drawings or specifications to determine job requirements and plan the layout of electrical systems.

Carry out installation work or modifications to existing electrical systems

Test for, locate and repair electrical malfunctions on a variety of electrical systems as well as carrying out tests and inspections on portable appliances.

Assist with instrument changes when required

           Must hold a current Electrical trade licence.

           Demonstrated hands on approach to maintenance of plant machinery and troubleshooting.

           Adhering to OH&S standards and practices.

           Basic computer literacy and good administrative skills

           Willingness to work with other trades

           Ability to work at heights

Desirable Selection Criteria

     An industrial maintenance background

     Exposure to working with PLC's.
