     Electronics Technical Officer/Technician

Salary range $47,373 to $79,472 p.a.

plus shift allowances (approx $7,000)

plus attractive superannuation

 

Applications are invited for two positions which are based at the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO) near Coonabarabran, NSW.

The AAO, which is one of the world’s leading astronomical facilities, operates two major optical telescopes, the 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) and the 1.2m United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope (UKST).

Coonabarabran is an attractive country town with very good schools, affordable housing, located within a clean & healthy environment and is the gateway to the popular Warrumbungle National Park.

The Electronics group requires two Technical Officers/Technicians to assist in the repair and maintenance of a broad range of electronic equipment, including telescope drive and control systems, robotics, computers, CCD and infrared detectors, television systems and a wide range of scientific instrumentation.

The successful candidates will hold an electronics degree, diploma, or equivalent. They are expected to work both as part of a team and be able to carry out repairs and project work self motivated and unsupervised. A demonstrated ability to work at heights is also essential. Each candidate is also required to participate in a rostered afternoon shift scheme of approximately 10 seven day shifts per year.

Two positions are available, one indefinite and one for a three year fixed term.

JOB DESCRIPTION

ELECTRONICS TECHNICAL OFFICER

 

     Work Unit:           AAT

     Classification     Level 3/5

     Manager               Head of AAT Electronics

Participate in maintaining telescopes and instrumentation and keeping peripherals free of defects on a day to day basis. This involves work on all of the electronic and electrical equipment associated with the telescope, computers, astronomical instruments and the telescope building and services. Carry out non-electrical tasks as needed for the operation and maintenance of the telescope such as the removal and installation of the instruments.

Act as duty technician on evening shift approximately one week in five and, as required, repair and maintain telescopes on an ‘on call’ basis.

On a continuing basis, maintain and test the instrumental performance of the various instruments for which there is a direct responsibility and, to a lesser degree, those instruments which fall within the responsibility of the instrumentation group. As necessary, develop this instrumentation in order to enhance performance and facilitate new modes of operation. Ensure that these instruments are presented to the scheduled observers on time for their scheduled observing run. Maintain relevant records.

Participate as a team member in instrument changes, aluminising mirrors, and setting telescope to work for observing on a day to day basis. This involves non-electrical as well as electronic and electrical work.

Assist visiting scientists in a technical support role to set up their instruments for observing runs and commissioning tests.

Design, construction and modification of electronics circuitry and assistance to the mechanical design group in electro-mechanical-optical improvements of instruments and infrastructure.

Selection Criteria 

Applicants must specifically address the selection criteria in their applications.

Essential Selection Criteria

1.         Must hold Electronic qualifications at Degree, Diploma, Certificate, or equivalent level.

2.         Aptitude in fault-finding and correction of faults in complex electronic systems.

3.         Capacity to understand the theory and operation of complex scientific instruments.

4.         Good interpersonal skills and a record of working well as part of a team.

5.         Good computer skills

6.         Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.

7.         Ability to work at heights.

8.         Ability to participate in an afternoon shift roster providing technical support including being on call.

9.         Current driving licence (manual).
