ANGLO-AUSTRALIAN OBSERVATORY
AAO Research Fellow
The Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO) wishes to
appoint a highly motivated Research Fellow. The successful applicant
will conduct research on programs in collaboration with the Head of AAT
Science and other AAO research staff. Specific ongoing research
programs that the Research Fellow will contribute to focus on galaxy
evolution, the role of star formation in galaxies and the significance
of galaxy masses, environment and interactions. The Research Fellow
will be supported in developing their own independent research program,
and will be expected to assist in the operations of the Observatory for
33% of their time, with the other 67% being available for their own
research.
The excellent facilities of the Observatory and
other telescopes open to AAO astronomers (which include UK
telescopes until July 2010) are available for use for the research
component of the role. The Observatory comprises the 3.9-metre
Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) and the 1.2-metre UK Schmidt Telescope
near Coonabarabran, NSW, and a laboratory in Epping, about 20km from
the centre of Sydney. The AAO also hosts the Australian Gemini Office.
There is a scientific staff of 12 highly
active and productive astronomers at the AAO, most of whom are based in
Epping, which is also the headquarters of the Australia Telescope
National Facility.
Candidates must have a strong background in
astronomy, astrophysics or a related branch of experimental physics.
The major areas of observational interest at the AAT are optical spectroscopy,
including the AAOmega multi-object fibre
system, high-dispersion spectroscopy at the Coude
focus, near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, and future
instrumentation for the AAT, Gemini, and other telescopes.
The position is available from 1 January 2009 and is
located on the Epping campus. The position is a 3-year appointment,
subject to the satisfactory completion of a 6-month probation period.
The salary will be in the range of $55,432 to $66,424 p.a. (Level 3.6
to Level 4.3), plus employer superannuation contributions. A fixed
relocation allowance plus other relocation expenses (including airfare
to Australia and
return on completion of the appointment), may also be paid for
applicants from outside the Sydney
