CONDITIONS

DURATION OF FELLOWSHIP

The period of tenure of the Fellowship shall be two years with an extension of up to 12 months in exceptional circumstances.

TRAVEL AND REMOVAL EXPENSES

TRAVEL

Where a fellowship is awarded to an overseas resident, the AAO will reimburse the cost of the cheapest direct airfare, for the Fellow and his/her dependents

On completion of the Fellowship the Fellow will be entitled to the same return fare provisions provided that the Fellow has not obtained subsequent employment in Australia for a period exceeding 12 months.

In the case of an award to an Australian resident, the AAO will meet transfer expenses on a basis comparable to that provided for Fellows travelling from overseas, for the Fellow and the Fellow's family.

Where a Fellow elects to travel by car, the AAO will provide a mileage allowance up to the maximum equivalent of the cheapest direct airfare.

To claim reimbursement of travel costs, Fellows will furnish the AAO with full particulars of their mode and time of travel and receipts for all payments.

REMOVAL EXPENSES

The Fellow may claim for removal expenses up to $12,000. To claim removal expenses Fellows should supply the AAO with full particulars of all costs incurred and receipts.

If the Fellow relinquishes the Fellowship before 12 months after commencement date, the Fellow will be required to refund all the removal expenses incurred. If the fellowship is relinquished within 6 months, the relocation allowance will be refundable on a pro rata basis.

RENTAL ALLOWANCE

A rental allowance will be paid for the duration of the Fellowship in accordance with Australian Government conditions.

Short term or casual assistance where some work in the research program requires an extra pair of hands or where some special expertise is required eg computer programming.

Equipment.

Minor items of equipment which are needed essentially full time for the research program of the Fellow and which cannot reasonable be made by the host institution. Equipment purchased from a Research Support Grant normally become the property of the host institution but may be subject to negotiation between institutions if the Fellow relocates.

Maintenance

Special chemicals, components, consumable and minor items necessary for the Fellow’s research program.

Travel

Subsistence and fares for field work, attendance at national or international conferences, workshops and seminars directly associated with and essential to the Fellow’s research program and where necessary for consultation with other workers.

PERFORMANCE OF DUTIES

The duties of a Fellow shall be to conduct research in the field proposed by the Fellow and to spend one third of his or her time supporting AAO activities as specified by the Director, AAO. Fellows shall diligently and to the best of their ability apply themselves to the duties of their Fellowship.

Fellows shall devote their whole time to their duties and may not accept additional appointment or emolument without prior reference to the Director, AAO.

A Fellow will be required to abide by the regulations (including disciplinary provisions) of the AAO.

MATERNITY LEAVE

Fellows are entitled to 12 weeks paid maternity leave in addition to the duration of their Fellowship. Any further leave must be taken as leave without pay.

SUSPENSIONS

In some circumstances a Fellow may apply for a suspension of the Fellowship. This may only occur if, for example, a Fellow is offered a short term Fellowship to travel overseas, and the work to be carried out overseas is relevant to the research being done in the AAO Fellowship. To be granted a suspension, the Fellow must seek the written permission of the Director, AAO.
