Hello! My name is Neal Schirmer, and I am the second keeper of the Mechanical workshop in the AAO Dungeon.

The best part about that is there is no problem with the air-con - it is always cool here

My main task here is to manufacture component parts for AAO instruments and the like, and I modify bought or existing materials to suit the job.

I generally work from high quality CAD drawings, but I see mud maps from time to time as well.

I work mainly with aluminium to save weight on the telescope. I glass bead blast and anodise all parts matt black to reduce reflections

But I am familiar with the use all manner of materials, P.V.C, DELRIN, NYLON, TEFLON, MLID STEEL, SIVER STEEL, STAINLESS STEEL etc.

I have been entrusted with a dated but well equipped workshop. I am reminded of that when we talk about assets.
