PNS-1 DESIGN

Instigated by NGD while at the AAO during 1994-5, PNS-1 uses two 600g/mm gratings splitting the 160mm collimated beam into two arms.

Damien Jones of Prime Optics presented his final design in a report March 1995.

This is a scale drawing (the small bar bottom right is 100 mm in length). Notice that the pupil is split by a V-shaped arrangement of gratings. The angle between the telescope axis and each arm is 19.543 degrees included angle between the axis and arms. This is close to the minimum required for clearance, and also close to the optimum for the commercially available blazed grating.
