DOWNLOADING & PRINTING THESE FILES
Most of the project's web pages are written in HTML, and I am proposing to make this the standard format for straightforward documents. The advantage is that such documents can be placed on the web and viewed, and printed, without the hassle of downloading a file.
All browsers have a print facility so you can make a print of the file you are viewing. Be aware that the final output may look slightly different (position of linebreaks, for example) depending on various settings.
If we need to know that a document looks exactly the same wherever it is printed then we will place a postscript version along with the viewable HTML source. Clicking on a link labelled *.ps will cause your browser to try to download the file rather than view it.
You will also need to download a file if you need to modify it. In most cases this will be a .txt or .html document which the browser can display. While viewing the file click on File and use the option save as... or save as file to save to your disk.
This is also something you can do when the browser has made a mistake and tried to display a document (like a zipped file or a postscript file) that you really wanted to download. This occasionally happens, although it is not very likely with the file formats used in this project.
Netscape has a short cut for downloading files. For example, if you change the URL to http://www.aao.gov.au/local/www/pns you get a directory listing. Clicking on any file while holding down the shift key will cause it to download. I can't find an exact equivalent in Microsoft Explorer.
To download a picture (normally a GIF file) which appears in a document use the `directory' trick of the previous paragraph and then click on the file to display it without the document in which it is normally embedded. Then use File and save as... again. This will work with Netscape and Explorer.
