Schedule Notes

General Notes

  • Dates : Australian public holidays are indicated by a `*'. Dark, Grey and Bright time is indicated by the 'D/G/B' column.
  • Proposal : Likely observers names are indicated in upper case.
  • Support
  • A 'Y', 'F', or 'N' indicates
    1. Y - support is requested for the whole run.
    2. F - support is requested for the first night.
    3. N - no support is requested or AAO staff are on the proposal and must provide support.
  • The three letter astronomers initials indicate which member of AAO staff is assigned to support each program
    1. If the name is in upper case then the astronomer is either supporting director's time, or is supporting because he/she is on the proposal.
    2. If the astronomer's name appears in parentheses then is not expected the astronomer will be present at the telescope, though the astronomer will be responsible for any other support required.
    3. In the case of 2dF, two support astronomers will often be listed. The FIRST name is the primary contact, and the astronomer responsible for coordinating the provision of position files etc.
    4. Support astronomers may be contacted at USERNAME@aaoepp.aao.gov.au, where USERNAME is the three letter initials used in the support column of the schedule.
    5. `mpe' or `MPE' refers to the Max Planck team who will be supporting the 3D instrument. Observers should contact the MPE team using the e-mail adresses given in the Announcement of Opportunity (http://www.aao.gov.au/local/www/sll/newsletter/jan97/3dnews.html).

Specific Notes for 1998A

  1. Feb 6. First half night to telescope tests (JOS and TJF). Second half night to UCLES service unless still required by telescope tests.
  2. Feb 11-16. A77 (Meadows & Crisp) has telescope from 0.5 hours before sunrise until 1.5 hours after sunrise. The remaining time goes to the scheduled 3D team program
  3. Mar 11-14. A76 has first half night. P19 has second half night. P19 is awarded time for the Klong part of their proposed programme.
  4. Mar 16-19. A32 has first half night. P60 has second half night.
  5. May 25-28. A12 has first three hours after evening astronomical twilight, with A50 having remainder of the night.
  6. May 29-31. In the event of bad weather, the programs scheduled for May 29-30, will slip to May 30-31, and an extra night of CCD imaging will be carried out. Note that this will require a weekend top-end change.
  7. Jul 9-14. P02 is to have the choice of whichever 4 nights of the 6 available they wish. P55 is to have the remaining nights.
  8. A17 is awarded time to carry out the omega Cen part of their proposed programme.
  9. Due to faintness of A11 target, CCD must be mounted several days before run to allow flourescent paint at Coude to fade.

Service Observing

PATT will not pay T&S for proposals allocated only one night. It is therefore assumed that PATT awards of one night will be carried out in service mode by the nominated support astronomer. If proposers are able to travel to the telescope using other funding, they should inform the relevant support astronomer and the Scheduler (sched@aaoepp.aao.gov.au) as soon as possible. Only P08 (Hambly etal) is affected by this in 1998A.

Half-nights

Half nights are defined by the midpoint between astronomical twilight.

2dF Observers

2dF programs are now being scheduled to specific nights. So except for 1 night runs allocated to PATT proposals, programs will no longer be carried out in service. PIs for 2dF programs are therefore required to send at least one, and not more than two, observers for their 2dF runs. PIs should inform the AAO through the usual travel channels of the proposed observers well in advance of their runs.

Over-ride Programs

The following are the standard conditions under-which over-ride programs are awarded time, and under which scheduled programs may be over-ridden.
"No over-ride is to last longer than 3 hours without the Director's approval. No one run is to be over-ridden more than once without the Director's approval. In either of these two cases pay-back time will be made available. No pay-back is made for a single over-ride of less than 3 hours duration."
