AAOmega Service Proposal Application Form

This form is for observers who wish to apply for service time at the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) using the AAOmega multi-object spectrograph. To apply for time, complete sections A to F of the form below. When completed, submit the form by clicking on the SUBMIT button. A copy of the information you have provided will appear on the screen and can be saved using the File-save facility on your web browser.

B: Instrument Setup

Only the multi-object spectroscopy mode (MOS) can be used at the present time. All of the advertised gratings are available. Nod-and-shuffle is enabled for up to 200 fibres, with or without cross-beam switching. Mini-shuffling is not yet available.

C: Observations

Complete the following table. For each field that you wish to observe give a field identifier, the coordinates of the field centre, the number of objects, the magnitude range for the objects, the average S/N required, the number of exposures, and the time per exposure (in seconds).

The total time requested, including calibrations, must be less than 6 hours.

Accurate astrometry (positions accurate to 0.3 arcsec or better) is essential for AAOmega observations. In the next box give details on the positional accuracy of your target objects and guide stars and explain how these have been obtained.
Note that it is essential that the Guide Stars and targets are on identical astrometric systems, preferably from the same source of catalogue material.

Calibration Observations

Standard calibration observations will be taken to correct for flat-fielding, sky subtraction and wavelength calibration. Basic calibration observations require up to 10 minutes per field per field plate. Other calibrations, such as for photometric or radial-velocity standards, require considerably more observing time.

The raw data from the service observers will be sent to the principal applicant as soon as is practicable.


D: Fld Files (Source Position Files)

We now encourage proposers to submit source position files (fld files) with the proposal, although submissions at any time are welcome. (Fully configured sds files are not required and should not be sent.) Please email the fld files to service@aao.gov.au, ensuring that:
    (i) your fld file names combine your surname with the field name and the fld file number, e.g.
    Smith_ngc253_1.fld
    (ii) you give your first initial and your surname in the email subject line, e.g.
    Subject: AAOmega service, J SMITH, obs file 1
We will accept a maximum of 10 fld files (unless prior arrangements have been made by emailing service@aao.gov.au ).

F: Scientific Justification and Figures

Is this application closely related to any AATAC applications for AAT time which you or your collaborators have submitted this Semester or intend to submit next Semester?
