Proposals to use KOALA are accepted for either visitor mode or service mode observing. See Applying for time on the AAT for more information on the application process.

Before preparing a KOALA proposal, interested astronomers should review "Part I: Overview of KOALA and AAOmega" of the KOALA+AAOmega Manual. That section provides all the necessary information to decide if KOALA is suitable for a particular science case and to prepare an observing proposal. In addition to the printable manual, there are the interactive tools listed below:

  • AAOmega Grating Calculator: Provides information on expected wavelength coverage and resolution for a particular configuration of the spectrograph.
  • SPIRAL Exposure time Calculator: Provides estimates of instrument performace for a particular setup. Performance of KOALA is approximately 1.5 times that reported by the SPIRAL calculator, however, interested astronomers are strongly encouraged to contact the instrument scientist for more complete information on instrument performance.
