Blanco Overview

The Blanco 4-m telescope was commissioned in 1974 and is operated by the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO). The observatory is located about 500km north of Santiago, Chile, about 70km east of La Serena, at an altitude of 2200 meters and is part of the U.S. National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO), along with the Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) in Tucson, Arizona.

Beginning in Semester 2012B, Australian astronomers receive 5 nights per semester on the Blanco telescope, via a time exchange agreement with NOAO that provides 5 nights of access to the NOAO community on the AAT.
