OTW2016 Contest Winners and Summary!

May 24, 2016

The International Telescopes Support Office in conjunction with the Australian Astronomical Observatory held the 2016 ITSO/AAO Observational Techniques Workshop from Tuesday May 3 to Friday May 6, 2016 at the AAO Headquarters in North Ryde, Sydney. The workshop provided an introduction to the optical and infrared facilities available to the Australian astronomical community, and included tutorials and demonstrations where participants were able to get their hands on real data and learn how to reduce it.

Data Challenge Presentations were given by AAO staff and other local experts, and on the second day of the workshop Dr Kathleen Labrie from the Gemini Observatory held the imaging data challenge. All the participants who wished to compete sent their versions of a reduced image for the galaxy NGC 6872 to the workshop chair Dr. Caroline Foster. After voting by jury we had two winners for this contest, Danica Draskovic of Macquarie U. in the category of the most 'artistic' (Picasso) and Ben MacLean of Monash U. in the category of 'true to science'.
